David Coggin threw six innings of no hit ball, but Doug Nickle picked up the win as the die hard fans who hung around to the finish "coaxed" a poor pitching performance out of Bob Scanlan, one of the original (shitty) Red Barons. Coggin and Tory Mattes went toe to toe and came out swinging, or at least that's what the batters did, with little to no success. With the score knotted at 0 in the 7th, Rob Sasser broke up the no hitter and promptly stole 2nd, the 3rd steal in 3 tries for the Lynx on the day. With two outs, Tomas "Of the Kelly Calpin" hit a inning ended ground ball to Nick Punto who thought it would be better if he fired the throw into the ground making it too hard to handle for Schall. It looked as though the Lynx were going to win the game on 1 hit when the Barons had scattered 5. Enter Bob Scanlan. Enter my windpipes and three random guys one section over who decided it was high time to make Scanlan feel washed up. And that he was. We got 4 straight balls to Gene Schall, Ball 5 to Estrada, and Ball 6, a wild pitch that put Schall on second. Estrada then hit a ground ball out, moving Schall to third. At this point some of the more passive of the 500 remaining fans decided to taunt Scanlan as well. Kevin Orie promptly ripped a single to right off of a diving Henry Mateo's glove. P.J. Forbes followed that effort with a single up the middle. With more than a few SCAN---LAN taunts and much general noise, David Francia, last year's hero, strode to the plate and took the first pitch to left for the game winning RBI!! Rigo Beltran and Doug Nickle pitched superbly in relief as the Red Barons one hit the Lynx. Oddly, Felipe Lira pitched very well out of the pen for Ottawa, if they left him in for the 9th, I don't think the Barons would have pulled it out.
BIG THANKS TO JOHN CAVANAUGH FOR THE TICKETS AND THE PREFERRED PARKING FOR TODAYS GAME!! CENTRAL CLAY BABY!
Discussion, Observation, and Complaints
Well they managed to fix "Home/Visitor" but not until the 7th inning! The scoreboard was off for a majority of the game as the staff tried to fix a malfunction that was bringing up the football version of the scoreboard. The PNC bank tried to fill in, but alas it did a piss poor job.
Kevin Orie is a quality player. He hustles, he plays a solid third sack. If he can stay healthy, he'll be a valuable asset. He seems like a good guy as well.
David Francia = Centerfielder? Hey, why not? But the Phillies need to send help. Reggie Taylor is out for 2 weeks and Turner Ward isn't eligible to come off the DL for about a week. As it is, we only have Aaron Royster to pinch hit.
That's it! Enjoy the Feshtival, Bring back BARRY JOHNSON, and some other catch phrases from 99. I'm out, see you in Syracuse boys on the 14th!
